Sam McEwen says of her latest exhibition New Work at Hartnell & Daughter - "This series of paintings started with a little rainbow painting and then just took off into ideas and about light and colours, the atmosphere and space, using the neon colour chart a rainbow seemed like an obvious direction to take." Inspired by space travel and the now defunct Space Shuttle, McEwen’s new paintings interconnect ideas of space and light with patterns of refracted light and whirl pools of colour. Using heat resistant paint and shiny metallic surfaces these tiny painting are a window into an ultra-modern world of galactic travel. "I think the way the series progressed has a lot to do with the jewel-like Hartnell Gallery which can turn the painting series into an installation." |
